About RPA
The RPA has an expanding number of on-going activities which it sponsors on a continuing basis.
The RPA's day to day operations are managed by the Advisory Committee.
We publish the Radical Philosophy Review (RPR), a biannual journal. The RPR includes original articles on the cutting edge of radical thought as well as reviews of the publications of RPA Members and other books of interest to radical philosophers. Volume I, Issue 1, of the RPR appeared in December of 1998. (Most information is available through the Philosophy Documentation Center). Our RPA Newsletter, published quarterly, keeps members informed about what's going on in radical philosophy.
The RPA organizes paper-reading sessions at the annual meetings of the American Philosophical Association's Eastern, Central, and Pacific Divisions. The RPA sponsors an annual Research Network in Cuba each June in Havana, Cuba. This two week trip includes a five-day conference at the University of Havana with professional counterparts and other activities designed to increase familiarity with Cuban society.
The RPA's Latin America Solidarity Group facilitates interchange with philosophers in Latin America and the Caribbean, and takes appropriate action in light of new "free trade" regimens. One of its efforts, the Chiapas Solidarity Project, worked on the health and relief needs of La Realidad in the Lacandon jungle of Southeastern Mexico. The RPA's Cross-Cultural Committee makes a commitment to furthering the development of cross-cultural philosophy. In even numbered years, the RPA holds a biannual International/National Conference. The 2000 Conference was in Chicago, Illinois, the 2002 conference was in Providence, Rhode Island, and the 2004 Conference was at Howard University. The 2006 conference was at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska, and it focused on the theme "Reclaiming Democracy: Visions and Practices from the Radical Left." In 2008 the RPA was at San Francisco State University.
The Center for Global Justice was formed in 2003 by a group of RPA members in the bilingual and multicultural community of San Miguel de Allende in the central Mexican state of Guanajuato, a living laboratory of neo-liberal globalization. The Center for Global Justice is an international educational and research organization located in the global South and dedicated to progressive social change. We support social movements that contend another world is possible. The Center has two main goals. First is to form a global network of members who gather, analyze and disseminate information on the world-wide effects of corporate globalization. The second is to explore and share workable and just solutions to the social and economic problems caused by neo-liberal policies. The Center has hosted three international conferences so far. On its web page you will find a couple hundred papers in English as well as in Spanish from its conferences and other projects. The Center also has a unique summer Internship Program that brings together students from the U.S., Cuba and Mexico for experiential learning in an intercultural setting. In addition, the Center is a site where faculty, students and activists can come for research or for a writing retreat. Several have come for investigation of immigration issues or to help organize cooperatives. The Center has a revolving loan fund to assist cooperatives and invites new members who share their goals. Members vote and they may list themselves in its Directory, submit work for publication on our website, and get discounts on our residential suites.
The RPA's Internet Committee maintains this web page and also helps keep track of an Email List for those who wish to discuss radical philosophy on-line.
The RPA conference proceedings, the Radical Philosophy Today book series, publishes peer-reviewed papers from the RPA biennial conferences. The first two volumes were published by Humanity Books, an imprint of Prometheus Press. Race, Class and Community appeared in 2000 and The Problems of Resistance: Studies in Alternate Political Cultures came out in 2001. After a considerable hiatus, the series continued with the Philosophy Documentation Center. Volume 3, Liberation between Selves, Sexualities, and War, edited by Greg Moses and Jeffrey Paris, appeared in August 2006; volume 4, Philosophy Against Empire, edited by Tony Smith and Harry van der Linden, appeared in October 2006; and volume 5, Democracy, Racism, and Prisons, appeared in December 2007. Volumes 3-5 can be ordered at the Philosophy Documentation Center, where one can also find the table of content of each volume. RPA members receive a price discount.
